In the heart of the Napa Valley, just off Silverado Trail in Yountville, lies a 21-acre parcel that’s a little slice of heaven. If you walk down the rows of this spectacular property – touch the knotty old vines, taste the opulent clusters of juicy, ripe fruit – you know you’re someplace very special. This is where Mary Rocca and her husband Eric Grigsby – a young couple with nothing but a love for the land in their hearts – bought their first vineyard and started their wine making adventure. Mary got her name on the winery, so Eric got his name on the vineyard. Today, the Grigsby Vineyard is where we grow the fruit that makes our 2010 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s Certified Organic, and meticulously maintained by our full time Vineyard Manager, Sergio Melgoza.

The 2010 growing season presented some unique opportunities for Rocca's winemaker Paul Colantuoni. A few late season heat spikes compelled the veteran winemaker to drop nearly half the Cabernet fruit from the vines.  The net result was a yield almost half as small as Rocca's typical production, but a wine that's packed with substantial tannic substance and an impressive array of flowers, spice, oak and mineral.

Celebrity chef David Shalleck took that question to a whole new level after tasting Rocca’s 2010 Estate Cabernet.

For Chef David, cooking is a gift we share with the ones we love. In Italy, they call it Stile di Famiglia: “Family Style.” It’s a type of dining where all the loved ones spanning generations are gathered around the table, enjoying generous portions from plates and bowls, talking, laughing and yes, even arguing as families do. During his hours in the kitchen developing this recipe, Chef David knew this wine was perfect for a Family Style dish, and drew upon his decades of experience to create just the right combination of flavors.

The result is Hunters Fettucine, a savory blend of pancetta, wild mushrooms, Roma tomatoes and hearty pasta. This exclusive recipe taps Chef David’s specialization in authentic coastal Italian, French and Western Mediterranean cuisine. As one of the most sought-after chefs in New York, David Shalleck has been called to work on the television sets of internationally recognized and celebrated chefs such as Jacques Pépin and Iron Chef Cat Cora. The idea for Rocca Family Vineyards began many years ago, in the minds of proprietors Mary Rocca and Eric Grigsby. Eric grew up with the stories of his father, a Tennessee farmer-turned-salesman, reminding him of their close connection with the earth and the bounty it bore. Mary, born in the rolling hills of northern California, spent many warm summer days working in her mother’s vegetable garden. Picking prunes and walnuts out of nearby orchards late each year inspired an awe for the bountiful harvest a carefully tended plot of land could produce. While launching their respective careers - Mary as a cosmetic dentist, and Eric as a physician - the pair dreamed of the day when they could re-establish this kind of connection with the land they loved.

In 1999, that dream came to fruition. A three-year search for the perfect vineyard finally yielded results: a 21-acre vineyard nestled deep in the heart of the Napa Valley, where the pair had made their home for over a decade. After renaming the new parcel The Grigsby Vineyard, Mary devoted her full attention to the new project, while Eric continued to cultivate a career as one of the nation’s most respected pain management physicians.

Mary called upon renowned winemaker Celia Welch Masyczek to produce the label’s first vintages. The debut bottling was the 1999 Syrah, a varietal which to this day garners praise and awards for the Rocca family. The following year, Mary purchased the 11-acre Colinetta Vineyard, planted on a small hill in the Coombsville Appellation, several miles east of downtown Napa. These two vineyards produce some of the Valley’s finest winegrapes, and in turn, some of the Valley’s finest wines. In 2008, Celia passed the winemaking baton to Paul Colantuoni, who has continued to produce world-class wines under the Rocca label.
