2009 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Collinetta Vineyard

Our 2009 Collinetta Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is the 4th vintage we've bottled from this site, and it's the most complete illustration yet of the intrinsic characteristics of this very special vineyard: Deep, dense color, aromas and flavors with a pronounced emphasis on ripe black fruits; finely sculpted, sophisticated tannins and an inherent personality of subtle, stylish elegance and refinement.

The initial impression is that the wine’s dense, rich color aptly reflects its deep core of black fruit.  The aromas here are intense and dark, like an extract of ripe blackberries, black currants, blueberries and black cherries.  Delicate floral notes and a hint of dark chocolate provide further depth and complexity.  On the palate the wine is supple and elegant, with delicious flavors that closely mirror its aromatics.  Structurally, this is textbook Collinetta Vineyard: The tannins are smooth and highly polished, with a precise, linear quality that gives the wine distinctive refinement and sophistication.  The finish here is pure and focused, with the flavor of fresh ripe blackberries persisting deliciously.

Vineyard Notes
This twelve-acre estate vineyard is named Collinetta (Italian for "little hill") to reflect the unique topography of the site, which gives our vines a 360-degree orientation to the sun. Located in the Coombsville area east of the town of Napa, the gentle slopes of the Collinetta Vineyard are covered with well-drained, rocky soils. This area of Napa Valley is much cooler than our Grigsby Vineyard in Yountville, allowing for a significantly longer growing season. These grapes typically ripen weeks later than their counterparts ten miles to the north, with increased color and structure.

Winemaker Notes
Our goal at Rocca is to make wines that reflect, as fully and faithfully as possible, the unique characteristics of the vineyards from which they come. To this end, all of our wines are made exclusively from our own organically-farmed, estate-grown grapes, which we selectively harvest by hand in the cool hours of the night. Once the fruit has been picked, we take an emphatically hands-off, non-interventionist approach to winemaking. This wine was created entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon from our Collinetta Vineyard, which was destemmed as gently as possible and allowed to ferment with the vineyard's own indigenous yeasts. It was then gently pressed off, and transferred into barrels. The wine was aged for 20 months in tight-grain French oak, approximately 80% new, before bottling in June of 2011.
