On the nose, dark aromas of blackberry, black cherry and black currant rise from the glass in a fascinating combination with delicate hints of graphite, black pepper, espresso, dark chocolate, cedar, and spring flowers.  The wine's delicious, ripe fruit flavors come across as exceptionally precise and focused, matching seamlessly with the finely sculpted, almost aristocratic tannins which are the hallmark of our Collinetta Vineyard. This Cabernet's concentration, balance, and elegant structure should ensure that it will develop beautifully for many years to come.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Vineyard Notes
This twelve-acre estate vineyard is named Collinetta (Italian for "little hill") to reflect the small knoll rising from the center of the property, which gives our vines a 360-degree orientation to the sun.  Located in the Coombsville area east of the town of Napa, the gentle slopes of the Collinetta Vineyard are covered with well-drained, rocky soils.  Compared to our Grigsby Vineyard in Yountville, this area of Napa Valley is much cooler, allowing for a significantly longer growing season.  The grapes ripen later than their counterparts ten miles to the north, with increased color density and structure.
Winemaker Notes
Winemaker Celia Welch worked closely with Sergio Melgoza, our vineyard manager, as they both believe that the art of making great wine begins in the vineyard.  Throughout Napa Valley, the 2007 vintage produced some of the greatest wine grapes in recent memory.  Conditions were remarkably mild and even, with very few heat spikes, allowing flavors and tannins to ripen slowly and beautifully.  Thanks to the benevolence of the season and to Sergio's dedicated efforts, the grapes matured with wonderful uniformity and we were able to harvest at the peak of ripeness.  The grapes were selectively hand-harvested during the cool morning hours, to preserve their freshness and natural acidity.  The fruit from each block of the vineyard was harvested and fermented separately, and aged in French oak barrels for an initial period of nine months.  In July of 2008 Celia added small finishing touches of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to the final blend for additional aromatic and textural complexity, and returned the wine to barrels for ten more months of development and integration before bottling in May of 2009.
