Our 2009 Vespera is comfort food in a bottle: our most forward, inviting, warm-and-cozy wine of the vintage. It’s the perfect wine to drink around a toasty fireplace on a chilly evening, spending time with family and good friends.
A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petite Syrah, 12% Petit Verdot and 1% Syrah, our 2009 Vespera is one of our most Highly Acclaimed and Award Winning wines to date. Vespera features rich, intense aromas that provide a warm welcome, offering an effusive mix of blackberry, dark cherry, and black currant scents. With time, enticing highlights of dark chocolate and spicy oak also emerge. The flavors here are broad and mouth-filling, packed with dark fruit, yet they show beautiful precision and balance. The wine’s final flourish lies in its remarkably smooth, elegant texture. The tannins are soft and caressing, providing a silky structure that allows delicious pure fruit flavors to sail on and on through the finish. Our 2009 Vespera promises to age beautifully for another 5 to 10 years, but the wine and the vintage make an almost irresistible case for immediate enjoyment.

At Rocca Family Vineyards, we believe deeply that all great wines are made in the vineyard. Our winemaker, Paul Colantuoni, and vineyard manager Sergio Melgoza work very closely together, taking tremendous care to ensure that our estate vineyards produce grapes of the highest possible quality. In 2009, Mother Nature rewarded their dedicated efforts with the kind of growing conditions they dream of. For the third year in a row, rainfall in Napa Valley was only about two-thirds of normal. This proved to be just enough to keep the vines healthy, while significantly reducing vegetative growth and naturally limiting vineyard yields. Grape clusters were fewer and smaller than in an average year, resulting in increased concentration and depth. From start to finish, temperature conditions were unusually cool, with none of the heat spikes that typically characterize summertime in Napa Valley. As a result, the grapes enjoyed an exceptionally long growing season that allowed them to achieve perfect ripeness while retaining remarkable levels of aromatic expression and fruit purity. Taken as a whole, wines from the 2009 vintage are intensely perfumed, with delicious up-front fruit and gorgeously silky tannins. They also show beautiful balance and grace, giving them considerable early appeal and an irresistible charm.

Our goal at Rocca is to make wines that reflect, as fully and faithfully as possible, the unique characteristics of the vineyards from which they come. To this end, all of our wines are made exclusively from our own organically-farmed, estate-grown grapes, which we selectively harvest by hand in the cool hours of the night. Once the fruit has been picked, we take an emphatically hands-off, non-interventionist approach to winemaking. The grapes are destemmed as gently as possible, and are allowed to ferment with the vineyard's own indigenous yeasts. The wine is then gently pressed off, and transferred into tight-grain French oak barrels for aging. In assembling the blend for Vespera, we carefully select individual barrels from the lots which best convey the sentiment behind this wine: our desire to pay tribute to friends, family, and the warmth we share together.
