At Rocca Family Vineyards, we believe deeply that all great wines are made in the vineyard. Our winemaker, Paul Colantuoni, and vineyard manager Sergio Melgoza work very closely together, taking tremendous care to ensure that our vineyards produce grapes of the highest possible quality. In 2012, Mother Nature gave them everything they could hope for: an utterly perfect, classic Napa Valley growing season from start to finish. Conditions that they call “textbook”, “ideal”, and “superb” led to a rare combination of excellence and abundance in the vineyards, and allowed us to select only the most perfect grapes for our winemaking endeavors. The wines from the 2012 vintage are simply spectacular. They are extroverted and charismatic, packed with rich fruit and characterized by soft, luscious tannins and exquisite balance.
Our 2012 Grigsby Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is everything you’d expect in a top-flight Cabernet from a classic, perfect Napa Valley vintage. Above all, it’s a perfect example of this vineyard’s trademark balance and proportionality. The aromas here are a compelling, deep, complex blend of ripe red and black fruits that intertwine together in perfect equilibrium. With time and air, significant highlights emerge of dark and milk chocolate, cocoa butter, vanilla, and spicy oak. This is one of those special wines that opens up and evolves for hours after the bottle is opened, and it’s an absolutely fascinating thing to experience. Pure, ripe fruit flavors are the focus on the palate. Descriptors are difficult here, as nothing sticks out as a separate, discernible component. Instead, everything is seamlessly woven together in a swirl of flavor that sails on and on across an intensely rich finish. There’s a bit more tannic heft here than in many of our past vintages, and we expect this wine to age beautifully. Given its textbook balance and its remarkable capacity for evolution, this should be a classic for decades to come.

Our Grigsby Vineyard is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Yountville Cross Road and the Silverado Trail, where the Yountville AVA meets the Stags Leap District. The soil here is a light clay loam, generously sprinkled with small river rocks, on a site that enjoys a very special balance of climate conditions. During the day, warm temperatures and full sun exposure encourage the grapes to develop rich, ripe flavors and polished tannins. In the evening, cooling marine breezes and fog from San Pablo Bay dramatically reduce temperatures in the vineyard, allowing the fruit to retain aromatic complexity, bright natural acidity, and a distinctive elegance. The vineyard is farmed with the highest quality considerations, and the fruit clusters are hand-thinned to prevent crowding or shading for optimal development.
Our goal at Rocca is to make wines that reflect, as fully and faithfully as possible, the unique characteristics of the vineyards from which they come. To this end, all of our wines are made exclusively from our own organically farmed grapes, which we selectively harvest by hand in the cool hours of the night. Once the fruit has been picked, we take an emphatically hands-off, non-interventionist approach to winemaking. The grapes are destemmed as gently as possible, and are allowed to ferment with the vineyard's own indigenous yeasts. The wine is then gently pressed off, and transferred into barrels. This wine was aged for 20 months in tight-grain French oak barriques, approximately 70% new, before being bottled in July of 2014.
